Installation

  1. Upload the plugin through `Plugins > Add New > Upload` interface or upload `social-media-tabs` folder to the `/wp-content/plugins/` directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  3. Configure the plugin options via the “Social Media Tabs” menu option in WordPress admin -> Settings

Using The Social Media Tabs Plugin

In order to add social media tabs to your WordPress website you will need a widget area in your theme files.

For slide out tabs location of the actual widget is not important since the plugin automatically sets the position at the side of the browser. For static tabs the widget needs to be located where you would like the tabbed box to appear.

To learn more about adding widget areas to WordPress see our WordPress tutorial – Adding A Widget Area To Your Theme Files.

Social Media Tabs Configuration

Icons

To change the icons used for the facebook, google, rss and twitter tabs enter the full URL to your new icon image in the text boxes. The current active icons will show in the right-hand column.

To return back to using the default social media icons delete the URLs from the text fields.

Disable Default Skin:

Check this box to disable the default skin that comes with the plugin. To use your own styles check the box and add the CSS to your theme’s style sheet. The default CSS file can be used as a template.

Open Links In New Window

Check the box if you wish all links within the media tabs open in a new browser window.

  • Hi, I’ve installed this plugin but the results is a blank box. What can I do? (screenshot: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/593/presentazionestandard1u.jpg/)

    Thanks!

    • Hi,

      Do you have a link to the page where it is installed?

  • Hi Lee,

    I’m loving this plugin, thanks.

    See my problem http://www.holiday-in-uk.com/wp-content/themes/Authorselvi1/error.png.

    The Social Media Tabs plugin doesn’t behave properly. How to fix this problem. Please Some idea…

  • Hey I love this plugin, cannot get it to work (yet).
    I was curious though, the version here for download is 1.2.2 and the version I obtained (wordpress plugins) is 1.2.3

    So either the link hasn’t been updated or its a slightly different version (that I am going to try right now).

    Love it Lee!!

    RN

    • Hi,

      1.2.3 is the latest version

  • Very nice. I think I’ll be using this when I finish my new layout :D

    • Hi,

      Thank you. Glad you like it

  • Hi Lee,

    The plugin looks great on the demo. Unfortunately, i’m having a problem with it showing up. The social media icons are there, but the contents are not showing. What am I missing? the site is at: http://certifiedfreelance.com I am using Breeze theme with WordPress 3.2.1.

    Thanks for looking into this.

    Florante

    • Hi,

      Your theme uses jQuery code to set up tabs in screen.js. Unfortunately its not very specific with the selector and therefore hides all content that has the class “tab-content”, which the social media tabs also happens to use. See following line in screen.js:

      /* Tabs */
      	jQuery(".tab-content").hide(); //Hide all content

      The above code needs to be changed to the following so that it only works on tabs:

      /* Tabs */
      	jQuery(".tab-container .tab-content").hide(); //Hide all content

  • Hi,

    The mailchimp sign up form has a javascript error which is stopping the tabs from loading properly

  • Hi, I really love this plug in, but I just can not get the Facebook tab to work. I keep getting the error message ‘Could not retrieve id for the specified page. Please verify correct href was passed in.’ I’m pretty sure I’ve got the correct Facebook ID, but I still can’t seem to get it to work. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers :)

    • Hi,

      It looks like the ID you are using is for a profile and not a facebook page. The facebook like box can only be used with a facebook page

  • Hi,

    I am webmaster for www. Katesoutham.com. We like your widget but the tabs are distorted and hidden by the post content, would you be able to offer any hints as to why? See your widget at the bottom right for a look at how it is working on our site. Thanks for any help you can provide.

    ALSO, DO YOU HAVE A LINKEDIN TAB tha tyou could add?

    Cheers,
    Rick

    • hi,

      There is a bug with the twitter feed layout. I have updated the plugin – see version 1.2.3. This should fix the problem

      At this time we dont have a linked in tab although we have been looking into what kind of info we could add that would be useful

  • Very nice plugin thanks, I only miss the mail tab. Is it possible to have a “subscribe to the feeds” tab added? Preferable with feedburner stats .
    Thanks in advance
    Giorgos

    • Hi,

      Yes that is something I have on my list of updates for the tabs plugin. Will hopefully issue an upgraded version soon

  • Hi,
    I love your plugin, but I can’t get it to work. It’s showing up but there’s no content in the boxes. Could you please take a look and advise? http://www.stinkmedia.ca/
    Thank you,
    Sandy

    • Hi,

      Try updating to version 1.2.3

  • Hi, I had this plugin in my web (looked very pretty) but then I installed Mailpress and didn’t work properly again. Any help there? are both plugins uncompatible?
    thanks!

    • See earlier reply to your previous comment about the same problem

  • Hi! I had this plugin functioning perfectly until I put the widget of MAILPRESS, then the tabs moved. Are both plugins incompatible? is there any solution? thanks!

    • Hi,

      I installed a copy of mailpress on a test site and it worked ok with the social media tabs. Do you have a link to the page where you have the problem?

  • Works great first time! THANKS! But…the page I’m working on has a white background and I’d really like to get rid of the tab border. Can you point me to the CSS lines I should modify. There are so many and I don’t want to mess up the rest of the formatting. THANKS

    • Hi,

      The following rules are where the border is added depending on whether you are using the static or slide out tabs:

      .sliding .dcsmt {
      background: #fff;
      border: 1px solid #ccc!important;
      }

      .static  .dcsmt{
      background: #fff;
      border: 1px solid #ccc!important;
      }

      • Thanks Lee…but now I’m not sure that’s what’s bothering me… Can you look at my page? http://slawsonenterprise.com When I look at your demos the icons are centered really pretty and the tab content is centered very nicely as well…but the presentation on my page…not so much. I took the advice in the readme file and simply added your CSS to my styles.css. I’m just really anal about positioning and I’m hoping you might have an idea how to make the widget display pretty like it does in the demo. THANKS

  • Is there a way to change CSS options to make the slider completely transparent?

    • Hi,

      You can use a custom style sheet and just remove the background color. Copy the default one that comes with the plugin as a starting point.

  • Hi, Lee! How can I add other social network in plugin?

    • Hi,

      the additional networks would need to be hardcoded into the plugin file to add both the content and the tab icon. The plugin will automatically handle the slider though since the number of tabs is no problem

      what other network were you wanting to add as we have been working on additional ones?

      • Hi again! This is third social network in the world (after facebook and twitter) and first in Russia – http://vkontakte.ru (there are more then 100 ppl).

        • sry, > 100 000 000 people

      • Hi Lee! So can you add “vkontakte” social network in plugin? ;) plz

        • Hi,

          No plans at this time unfortunately

  • I love your plugin but my tweeter feeds dont seem to work, i constantly get the error “An Error Occurred: No response from Twitter. Please try again in a few minutes.” I put MyFlexFitness as my user name but it doesnt seem to work.

    • Hi,

      I just checked and it appears to be working OK now. Are you still seeing a problem?

  • I am loving this plug-in! The only thing I have not been able to work out is the way it loads visibly on page load. When you go to http://chef2.chefemanuel.com, you will see it loading and taking up most of the page until everything in the page loads and finally settles into place. Is there any way to prevent this that you are aware of?

    thanks,
    Luann

    • I got no response to my post — any tips that might help? Thanks.

      • Hi,

        Add the following CSS to your theme’s style sheet

        .social-tabs, .dcsmt {display: none;}
        .dc-social .social-tabs, .dc-social .dcsmt {display: block;}

      • Looks like I’ve resolved it by loading it into a Footer widget rather than a Header one.

  • Howdy,

    I have added SMT to a widgetized box. It appears on every page but the main page. How can I make it appear on every page including the main page?

    Thanks

    • Hi,

      make sure that your theme template file for the main page also contains the widget area. Also check that your theme does not have any options/settings, which disable the widget area for the home page

  • Hello, I love how this plugin works but I can’t for the life of me get it to work on our site. I’m not a WordPress guru by any stretch so I did my best to check the footer code you mentioned in the template but it seemed to fine (I think). You mentioned that jquery could be loading twice in a previous comment, but I wasn’t sure where to look for that. The site is http://kamloopsscene.com and you can see the plugin loading near the bottom in the sidebar any help would be much appreciated! Thanks so much!

    • hi

      which pages is it installed on?

    • Hi,

      The problem is actually caused by your theme files reloading jquery. it seems to be associated with the pikachoose gallery. the theme files will need to be modified to remove the jquery code and load it using the enqueue_script function in WordPress

  • This plugin is just what i was looking for, but I´m in need of help: It works perfectly in all the pages of my site, but in the homepage it seems to be broken. looking at the source code I noticed that the first wrapping div is missing. Can you help me?
    http://www.intorno.com.ar/site
    Thanks!!!

    • Hi,

      The problem is caused by MailPress incorrectly loading jquery. try disabling this feature and see if it now works

  • Hi Lee, hoping you can help with this – the Social Media Tabs plugin doesn’t behave properly. Instead of being tabbed, all the social media info is stacked. Here’s an example showing Twitter and Facebook:

    http://knitpad.com/SocialMediaTabs%20copy.JPG

    Or you could just go to knitpad.com. I left it live so you could see it “in action”.

    Maybe you have some idea? I set the width and everything the way you have it in the example above, and it still scoots off the edge of the screen, too.

    I am using the default skin with no mods.

    wp_footer() is there just before the closing body tag.

    Thanks!!

    • Hi,

      There is a javascript error in the theme, which stops the social media tabs from loading correctly. It looks like the error is due to the theme trying to create some other tabs but the tab plugin isnt available.

      Based on your page source code the problem is somewhere in your theme’s header file. Currently the code looks like this:

      <!-- Javascript -->
      <!-- <script type="text/javascript" src="http://knitpad.com/wp-content/themes/open/js/jquery.tools.min.js"></script&gt; -->
      <script type="text/javascript" src="http://knitpad.com/wp-content/themes/open/js/superfish.js"></script&gt;
      <script type="text/javascript" src="http://knitpad.com/wp-content/themes/open/js/custom.js"></script&gt;

      The second line shows the necessary plugin for the theme tabs is commented out … however …

      If you uncomment the line it will cause other problems because that particular script will load jquery a 2nd time. We therefore need to change that for a different version.

      In your theme files change the above 4 lines to the following:

      <!-- Javascript -->
      <script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.jquerytools.org/1.2.5/all/jquery.tools.min.js"></script&gt;
      <script type="text/javascript" src="http://knitpad.com/wp-content/themes/open/js/superfish.js"></script&gt;
      <script type="text/javascript" src="http://knitpad.com/wp-content/themes/open/js/custom.js"></script&gt;

      Everything should now work OK.

      Additional note though – your theme’s styling is adding a margin to the bottom of the social media tab icons. You can fix this by adding the following line to your theme’s style sheet:

      #content ul.social-tabs {margin-bottom: 0;}

      • Hi Lee! Thanks for your quick reply.

        The code above caused the plugin to take over my entire site…not sure what happened! Oh well..

        I completely commented out all 3 lines under and now it all works perfectly.

        Thanks!!

        Vash

        • should say all three lines under

          <!--Javascript-->

          . :P

        • My code isnt being formatted properly in the comments it seems. anyway glad you fixed it. By commenting out the custom.js file it removes the error.

  • Love this plugin, but would appreciate some ways to style the facebook section. I’m currently pulling a much ‘cleaner’ version of the facebook fan box with this code in a text box:

    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://static.ak.facebook.com/js/api_lib/v0.4/FeatureLoader.js.php/en_US"></script><script type="text/javascript">FB.init("4f2c3595bde1b0c6551c7361fd1d50a6");</script><fb:fan profile_id="your_profile_id" stream="" connections="20" width="300" height="390"></fb:fan>
    • hi,

      This is something we are looking at for future updates.

  • Hi,
    I don’t understand the plugin don’t work properly in my wordpress. It does’nt even appear, yet I tried several configuration. I even reproduced the same configuration in the social media tab’s page.
    It’s a shame because with the plugin “slick social share button” (which works) it would have been perfect.

    your plugins are fantastic.

    Thanks for your help

    • Is the widget area code correctly added to the theme files? I checked the site and all of the correct code is there except for the actual tabs

      Try adding to the same widget area as the accordion menu and check

  • The main site l am trying to fix http://samplesite.m3marketinggroup.com/, the tabs do not work

    • Hi,

      Both sites to be missing the wp_footer() function – see faq The profiles all appear in the widget area but not in a tabbed sliding panel

      • Hello Lee,

        I am totally new to this, still confused, sorry to be a pain

        • No problem

          Check your footer.php file in your theme folder. It should contain the following code:

          <?php wp_footer(); ?>

          If it doesnt. Try adding it just before the closing body tag:

          <?php wp_footer(); ?>
          </body>

  • I truly love this plugin, its worked on 1 website with the tab face-foundation.com, but on m3marketinggroup.com & childshandfoundation.com, its not working, the slider does not function, please help

  • Hi Guys,

    I am new in the blog field, trying to install your Social Media Tabs plugin, which is a “must have”.
    I am pulling my hairs trying to make it work. I don’t know what it is I’m going wrong.

    I don’t now if the theme i’m using is not compatible but none of the static nor slide out tabs are displayed properly.

    Here is my blog : http://s380602697.onlinehome.us/

    If anybody could give me some ideas I would really appreciate. Thanks again

    • Hi,

      You have jquery being loaded a 2nd time in the head, which is overwriting the plugin files. Try removing the following line from your theme files:

  • Nice work but i am interested is it posible to put FOURSQUARE insted of Google+?

    Please replay to my mail as soon as posible

    • Hi,

      Can definitely have a look at adding a foursquare option

      • I will be great full if you can do that. Thanks for this awesome plugin. I am testing it right now with my various blogs and themes.

  • Would be nice to have an option to set language for different plugins, like for Facebook.

    • Hi,

      That’s something we can certainly look at adding in a future update

  • This plugin is awesome and I truly appreciate your work. Do you plan on integrating LinkedIn as part of the tabs? Would it be relatively simple to add it to the options?

    • Hi,

      Actually I was just looking at that today to see whether there is something we can set up for linkedin. The only thing I can find is to add a profile box, although it doesnt look very exciting. Is there anything in particular you were wanting to include from the linkedin site?

  • Hi there,

    I’ve been using this on my site for a while but something strange has happened lately. I use the static version of the plugin and it works great for all my posts and such but my pages have this odd display http://gamelitist.com/links/.

    I’ve been messing with plugins lately but I don’t think I’ve changed anything that relates to the sidebar.

    • Hi,

      There is an error with the sharebar plugin, which is stopping the jquery loading for the media tabs. The error is:

      jQuery(sharebar).offset() is null
      http://gamelitist.com/press/wp-content/plugins/sharebar/js/sharebar.js?ver=3.2.1 line 27

      • Thanks for the info.

        I’ve been able to find a fix on the Sharebar forums.

        • OK glad you got it fixed

  • I love the widget but mine is a little buggy. Sometimes the feed box will box to the right of the social tab buttons this happens on computers as well as mobile devices but mostly on the mobile devices. It doesn’t happen every time you load the page but very frequently. Does anyone have a fix for this or having a similar issue?

    Here’s a link to my site: http://maadmoiselle.com/wordpresssite/home/

    • Hi,

      Have never come across the problem although it sounds like something in your theme’s style sheet may be interfering with the tabs CSS

    • Try adding the following CSS rule to your theme’s style sheet and see if that stops the problem:

      .dc-social.static .dcsmt {clear: both;}

  • Hi!

    great plugin!
    I was wondering how I’d be able to add an h3 tag above the social plugin.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    • Hi,

      Easiest way is to probably just add the h3 tag directly above the widget area in the template files

  • Hi there,

    Plugin looks awesome but comes up with the following error message every time I refresh, can you please let me know what I need to do to have it displaying on my website the whole time?

    Fatal error: Call to undefined method MagpieRSS::get_author() in /home/foodiecr/public_html/wp-content/plugins/social-media-tabs/inc/dcwp_admin.php on line 880

    I’ve removed it for the time being as when the above error message comes up everything on my right column disappears with it.

    Also re the facebook page, the page id I have is for my facebook app which has no content, is there anyway of linking to the page (www.facebook.com/foodiecravings)?

    Thanks
    Michelle

    • Hi,

      Does the google ID field contain a valid google profile ID?

      For the facebook tab use the following ID if you want to add the foodiecravings page:
      242548872438393

      • Hi Lee, thanks the facebook page worked and I think you are right it was a google thing, I removed Google+ from my the tabs and it’s now working fine. It was the right Google ID but might have been some conflict from the plugin? Cheers

  • Is it possible to change the RSS tab into a YouTube tab that will show the YouTube subscription widget?

    • Hi,

      Have added a YouTube subscription option – version 1.2

  • Hi Lee,

    I’m loving this plugin, thanks. I was wondering if it’s possible to tweak it so it opens and closes with a mouse-over rather than click? I tired playing with the code and can get it to open with hover, but it only closes with a click. Is there any way I can get it to close when I take the mouse off it?

    Many thanks,
    Elli

    • Hi,

      Currently the plugin doesnt support it. You will need to edit the jQuery plugin file that comes with the plugin.

  • Hi – I am looking forward to using this plugin, however, it’s not displaying in my sidebar correctly. I tried disabling the skin, but it just made it worse. I’ve included links to the two different screen shots. Any help is appreciated!

      You need to use the default skin or replace it with equivalent CSS as there are several styles that are required in order to create the slider effect. On your current site is the skin disabled?

    • Your tab images have URLs that are pointing to the actual twitter account, RSS feed, etc. Have these been entered into the plugin options page or is the plugin doing this automatically? If the former delete the URLs in the icon text fields and leave blank so it uses the default icons and see if that improves the problem

      • Hi Lee,

        Thanks! Fixing the image links on the plugin options helped quite a bit. The formatting is still a little bit off on the Twitter and RSS tabs. I’m not a whiz at CSS, so let me know if you think there’s something I can change there.

        Thanks again!

  • Do you have this application available for websites which do not use WordPress?

    Many thanks

    • Hi,

      Unfortunately not as a complete package since the tab content uses built-in functions from WordPress. The actual slide out tabs though is generated using a jquery plugin, which you can take from the plugin files. Any kind of content can be added to the tabs.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for nice plugin. I have problem with this plugin is I am not getting the php short code for this plugin (I am using my own page only in the wordpress). If it possible can you send that to my mail.

    Thanks in advance

    Rajesh

    • Hi,

      There is no shortcode for this plugin. The plugin can be added to the page using a widget area

  • It does not work, shows;

    public_html/wp-content/plugins/social-media-tabs/inc/dcwp_admin.php on line 729

    • Hi,

      I dont understand the problem sorry. Please explain

  • [...] the live demo on the plugin’s homepage to see it in [...]

  • I am psyched to use this plugin, but I am having a strange problem – the options page will not save any changes! I make a change, hit the Save button in that section – but the screen returns and my change is reset to the default.

    - I am running WP 3.2.1, and v 1.2.5 of the plugin
    - MySQL 5.0.91, php 5.2.17

    - all other plugins can save options
    - I disabled all other plugins – still can’t save options

    Odd. Please help – I do appreciate your time!

    - jim

    • Hi,

      This is the same problem you had with the social share buttons plugin.

      The problem must be occuring locally and something is interfering with the save process. I can only suggest as before that you check the other plugins or if there are any kind of errors in your WordPress admin – can check this using Firebug on firefox

      • Sorry about the double post, didn’t see this response, my bad.

        I am trying to narrow this down, but hitting brick walls (at least, to the point that I can troubleshoot)
        - I don’t think it”s anything in my theme – I’ve switched to default WP theme, no impact
        - I’ve run it in IE7, Chrome, Firefox – all the same problem

        I have Firebug installed, but am not proficient. the only errors I see are this:

        1) 404 file not found for the https://www.paypalobjects.com/…/pixel.gif file

        2) A huge number of CSS errors

        Is there some way to capture a trace from Firebug?

        • Hi,

          When you try to save do you get the following in the URL:

          options-general.php?page=social-media-tabs&settings-updated=true

          Also does it show a message at the top of the page saying “Settings saved.”?

          • Ahh, false alarm – at least for your excellent plugin.

            My issue was that my SQL database was at it’s limits – I am compressing and optimizing it so I can save records to it.

            Thanks for your help – but this one is all my problem, hhh

          • Hi,

            OK glad it wasnt the plugin at least

  • This is a very slick plugin! It’s awesome! The only thing I couldn’t find was a way to insert it into my template via a template tag or a shortcode, is it difficult to build in this functionality? We have a lot of WordPress sites that do not use side bars so this would be an awesome feature. Please let me know if you plan to add this feature or if there is a way to insert in my template.

    • Hi,

      Thank you.

      There are a lot of options for the widget, which would make a shortcode pretty confusing to write in my opinion. Inserting via a widget is far easier to manage.

      You dont actually need a sidebar to create the widget and if you are using the slide out version then the location of the widget area is not important since it gets positioned relative to the browser anyway. Adding a widget area just requires a couple of lines of code adding to the functions.php file and then one line in the template file where you want to place the widget. There is a tutorial on creating widget areas – http://www.designchemical.com/blog/index.php/wordpress-tips/wordpress-tutorial-adding-a-widget-area-to-your-theme-files/

  • [...] Social Media Tabs allows you to add facebook, google +1, buzz, twitter and RSS profiles and feeds to any widget area with stylish sliding tabs. [...]

  • I Love the idea of this, but I can’t get it to display properly with my template.. as demonstrated here: http://binghamtonrestaurantweek.com/wp/updates (and on the “about the charity page”)

    Also, would it be possible to make it show universally across all pages, even ones that don’t have widget areas? similar to thethe fly’s “sliding panels”

    any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    • Hi,

      It looks like the style sheet hasnt loaded. Go to the options page for the plugin, make sure the “Disable Default Skin” option in unchecked, then press save. See if that fixes the problem

  • Hello, I think you have a great widget and I believe it is exactly what I’m looking for, but I’m having trouble installing it onto my website. When I activate the plugin, the following error occurs:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function wpcom_time_since() in /home/ … /wp-content/plugins/social-media-tabs/inc/dcwp_admin.php on line 729

    I’m not intelligent enough to solve this problem, so I hope you can help me figure out the solution. My website is at http://www.arlingtontxlive.com.

    Thanks for your help!

    • Hi,

      Thanks for the info. An update is uploading to WordPress now and should be available in the next 15 mins – version 1.1.

      • I am getting this error message everywhere I have this plugin installed: Fatal error: Call to undefined method MagpieRSS::get_author() in /home/content/08/6610408/html/teens/wp-content/plugins/social-media-tabs/inc/dcwp_admin.php on line 880

        I saw some others post the same thing, but I don’t think I saw any way to fix it. Did I miss something?

        Thanks so much!

        • Hi,

          Do you have a valid google profile ID in the widget settings?

          • Yes. And it seems to be working in my editor, but when I publish, it gives that error message.

          • Seems to be working fine now…weird.

            I may be back. LOL

            Great plugin!

          • May be a google thing!
